Theatre for Young Audiences
ArtsReach and Little Red Wagon are opportunities for students to get practical experience in children’s theatre. Most young performers are hired at children’s theatres, so it’s a wonderful real-world experience that prepares our students. Part of that preparation is learning to take on technical positions so that the tour can be self-sufficient.
About the Playwright
Adam Eugene Hurst helped start the Chicago based theatre company Honest Theatre and is a long distance member of the Chicago Dramatists. He currently resides in Seattle, Washington with his wife, Chelsey, his dog, Gordon, and his soon to be born daughter. We’re thinking of calling her Clementine. Or Larry. My niece wants to name her Larry. Some of his playwriting credits include: A FAMILY PLAY, MATTHEW THREE HORN, I-HEARTS-HIGH SCHOOL, ZOMBIE MAKE UP, GRAMS AND GODMOTHERS, BEST FRIENDS, and JO THE WOLF. He received his Master of Fine Arts from Regent University in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
Playwright’s Note: This play is not only about embracing the fact that we're all different, it’s also about the fact that we should celebrate those differences together. Thank you all for being here and being a part of all this.

Director's Notes
This production has toured on Friday’s this semester (13 productions in 13 weeks, reaching over 1000 students). Children’s Theatre is a long-standing tradition in UNH’s Department of Theatre and Dance. Matthew Three Horn was submitted to and chosen as co-winner of the 2021 Anna Zornio Memorial Children’s Theatre Playwriting Award. We particularly liked the message of Matthew Three Horn because kids often have to deal with bullying. In fact, teachers at different schools told cast members that their students really needed this message since bullying is currently a problem many of the schools are facing. Through the whimsical lens of characters who are monsters, we see a poignant journey of a boy who is different from everyone else. Matthew learns how to deal with conflicts with the help of an ally, and his bully also learns and grows as well. Everyone learns to accept differences as strengths, and they all end up celebrating those differences. Live theatre allows students to observe particular behaviors and consequences, which helps them build empathy for peers who might be in the same situations. Matthew Three Horn in particular is a great way for students to see the impact of bullying along with constructive ways to resolve conflicts.
