Scene

Eleven-year-old Anne Shirley has never known a real home. Since her parents' deaths, she's bounced around to foster homes and orphanages. When she is sent by mistake to live with Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert at the snug white farmhouse called Green Gables, she wants to stay forever. But Anne is not the sturdy boy Matthew and Marilla were expecting. She's a mischievous, talkative girl with a fierce temper, who tumbles into one scrape after another. Anne is not like anybody else, and the Cuthberts agree; she is special, a girl with an enormous imagination. All she's ever wanted is to belong somewhere. And the longer she stays at Green Gables, the harder it is for anyone to imagine life without her. Produced by special arrangement with YouthPLAYS (www.YouthPLAYS.com)

Director's Notes

Growing up, I was an avid reader. I read Harriet the Spy, A Wrinkle in Time, Jane Eyre, The Once and Future King, and all of the Little House on the Prairie books. I loved getting lost in the worlds of those stories, so I don’t know how the Anne of Green Gables series eluded me. I used to climb trees and make up fantastical adventures in the woods. I used to inadvertently get myself into precarious situations. Anne would have been a welcome friend. I’m so glad, though, that I finally got the chance to encounter this story. As we are continuing to cope with the effects of COVID-19, it was a pleasure to focus on this production about an imaginative force of nature who brings joy and love to those she encounters.

Donna Hoke entered her adaptation of this play into the Anna Zornio Memorial Children's Theatre Playwriting Award which was established to honor a UNH Theatre and Dance alumna who was passionate about theatre for youth. She unfortunately died very young, but her family established this award in her honor. This is a national competition which has been giving awards since 1980. The winning script is produced as part of the UNH Theatre and Dance season. We are proud to have the chance to work on this particular story at a time when we need to be reminded of the simple joys in life. At its heart, the play is about finding a place to belong. In a world that can feel chaotic and anxiety-ridden, we hope you will find respite for a couple of hours as you encounter Anne of Green Gables.
